About Alonnisos Northern Sporades National Marine Park

Established in 1992, the Alonnisos Northern Sporades National Marine Park spans across the Northern Sporades archipelago in the Aegean Sea, off the coast of mainland Greece. It covers a vast area of both land and sea, including parts of Alonnisos island, Skyros island, and several smaller islets. This protected area is significant for its diverse ecosystems, comprising pine and holm oak forests, rocky shorelines, caves, and extensive marine habitats. The park is particularly important as a refuge for the endangered Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), one of the rarest marine mammals globally, alongside a rich community of marine species including dolphins, sea turtles, and numerous fish and invertebrates. Visitors to the park can enjoy a variety of recreational activities such as hiking through scenic island trails, snorkeling or diving in crystal-clear waters, boat tours exploring secluded coves and sea caves, and wildlife viewing, especially focusing on seals and bird species. Historical remnants such as small monasteries, ancient ruins, and traditional fishing villages add cultural interest. The marine park encompasses strict protection zones where human activity is limited to preserve biodiversity, alongside buffer zones allowing sustainable tourism and fishing. The exceptional natural beauty, combined with opportunities for eco-tourism and marine research, makes this park a unique destination for outdoor enthusiasts and conservation advocates alike.
